Buying an expensive watch online is scary considering the extensive network of scammers out there. I took every precaution I could before I purchased a Rolex from Igor at Diamond Source NYC. All said and done, Igor did everything he promised. He is honest, responsive and very respectful. Upon receipt of the watch it was exactly as described. Beautiful, unworn and 100% authentic. This guy can find anything you’re looking for. Thanks Igor.

Took a good amount of time to assess what I had and gave me top dollar matching and exceeding another estimate. They even allowed me to watch them count the cash given to me. I would come back to work with them again.

Igor is a good guy and has good business. If you want a watch this is the place to go to.. talked with multiple people to source a watch I wanted and he took care of me and was able to be competitive to everyone else’s prices. He is in it for the long term relationship opposed to trying to make the most off of someone initially. He’s earned a long term customer for life and will be getting every future watch from him. Look forward to growing the collection and having someone I know will not take advantage and will get me the best piece for the best price!

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is the watch that broke every rule that existed in 1972 — and wrote the ones the entire industry still follows today.

Designed by Gérald Genta in a single overnight session and presented to a skeptical market at a price five times higher than comparable gold watches, the Royal Oak introduced stainless steel as a luxury material, the octagonal bezel as a design language, and the integrated bracelet as a standard expectation. None of these existed before April 15, 1972.

At Diamond Source NYC, we carry one of the most comprehensive inventories of authenticated Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watches available in New York — every reference, every size, every complication.

With 30+ years of expertise in Manhattan’s Diamond District, we evaluate every Royal Oak with the technical precision and market knowledge these watches demand.

The Watch That Changed Everything

In early 1972, Audemars Piguet's direction was concerned. The quartz crisis was dismantling the Swiss watch industry. Brands were cutting prices, reducing complexity, and hoping to survive on volume. AP took the opposite position — they commissioned Gérald Genta, already the most celebrated watch designer in Geneva, to create something the market had never seen. Legend holds that Genta sketched the Royal Oak on a napkin in a single evening. The octagonal bezel was inspired by a diver's helmet — eight screws holding a pressure seal. The Tapisserie "Grande Tapisserie" guilloché dial gave the austere steel case unexpected visual texture. The integrated "Bracelet H" welded seamlessly to the case was borrowed from bracelet design, not watchmaking convention.

The ref. 5402 launched at the Basel Fair in April 1972 at 3,300 Swiss francs — more than a Rolex Datejust in gold. The industry laughed. Collectors did not. By the late 1970s, the Royal Oak was the most copied watch design in the world. Today, over 500 variations later, the Royal Oak remains the benchmark against which every luxury sports watch is measured — and consistently found wanting.

Royal Oak References We Carry

Royal Oak 41mm — Ref. 15500ST

The current production standard. Calibre 4302, 70-hour power reserve, updated date window. Blue, black, silver, and green dials. The 15500ST replaced the 15400ST in 2019. The most liquid reference on the secondary market — steel blue sells at or above retail consistently.

Royal Oak Jumbo — Ref. 15202

The purist's Royal Oak. 39mm case housing the ultra-thin Calibre 2121 — the same movement architecture as the original 5402. No date. No crown guards. Just the essential geometry. The 15202 is the most historically faithful production Royal Oak and commands significant premiums in steel.

Royal Oak Chronograph 41mm

Three subdials on the Tapisserie dial — the most balanced chronograph layout in the category. Calibre 2385 column wheel movement. Available in steel, rose gold, and titanium. The chronograph adds sporting function to the Royal Oak without compromising the dial's visual architecture.

Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar

The most technically demanding non-grande complication Royal Oak. Full perpetual calendar with moonphase, day, date, month, and leap year — integrated into the Tapisserie dial through a remarkably legible subdial layout. The ultra-thin perpetual calendar at 8.1mm case thickness is a genuine technical feat.

Royal Oak Skeleton / Openworked

Movement architecture exposed through the dial — bridges, gear trains, and the balance wheel visible from the front. AP's openworked Royal Oak replaces the Tapisserie with a three-dimensional view of the calibre's finishing. Double Balance Wheel Openworked references in steel and precious metals are among the most collected Royal Oak variants.

Royal Oak Tourbillon

Flying tourbillon visible through an aperture in the Tapisserie dial. AP's Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin at 6.4mm case thickness set the world record for thinnest tourbillon wristwatch when it launched. Available in yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold — each produced in extremely limited quantities annually.

Royal Oak Rose Gold

18K rose gold case and bracelet with salmon, blue, or black Tapisserie dial. The warm metal elevates the Royal Oak toward formal occasions without abandoning its sporting character. Rose gold Royal Oak references in 41mm carry strong secondary market premiums — particularly with salmon dial configurations.

Royal Oak Diamond Bezel & Iced Out

Factory diamond bezels across the Royal Oak's eight-sided bezel — each facet individually set by AP's gem-setting atelier in Le Brassus. Full pavé dial and case configurations. Custom iced-out Royal Oak references with aftermarket diamond settings also available. We authenticate factory versus aftermarket on every diamond piece.

Royal Oak Ladies — 33mm & 34mm

The Royal Oak's design scales to 33mm and 34mm without losing a single design element. Quartz and automatic movements. Available in steel, rose gold, white gold, and yellow gold — many with diamond bezels and pavé dials. The most sought-after ladies Royal Oak references carry the same collector premium as men's steel sports models.

Why the Royal Oak Continues to Command Premium Prices

Supply deliberately constrained

AP produces approximately 50,000 watches per year total across all collections. The Royal Oak's share of this is a fraction of global demand. Waiting lists at authorized boutiques for steel references extend years — making pre-owned the only realistic path to ownership for most collectors.

15500ST sells above retail

The Royal Oak 15500ST in stainless steel with blue dial has traded at 130-180% of retail on secondary markets since its 2019 introduction. No other currently produced watch maintains this premium as consistently across all market conditions.

Gérald Genta design — protected

The octagonal bezel with eight hexagonal screws is trademarked intellectual property. No competing brand can reproduce the Royal Oak's defining visual element. This exclusivity is permanent — it cannot be competed away, only counterfeited.

Family-owned manufacture

AP remains majority-owned by the Audemars and Piguet families — the same founding families since 1875. No external shareholder pressure. Every production decision is made on craft and brand grounds. This independence is why the Royal Oak's quality has remained consistent for over 50 years.

Cultural penetration unmatched

Athletes, musicians, executives, and collectors across every demographic and geography wear the Royal Oak. Jay-Z, LeBron James, and John Mayer have all collaborated directly with AP. Cultural visibility at this level is a permanent driver of aspirational demand.

Every surface hand-finished

Every Royal Oak case alternates between polished and brushed surfaces — bevels polished, flat surfaces brushed — on every facet of the octagonal bezel, case, and bracelet. This finishing standard is executed by hand and requires hours per watch. No machine can replicate the crisp transition between surfaces that defines a genuine Royal Oak.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak FAQs

What is the current production Royal Oak reference?

The current standard production Royal Oak is the ref. 15500ST in 41mm stainless steel, introduced in 2019 to replace the 15400ST. It houses the new in-house Calibre 4302 with 70-hour power reserve. Available in blue, black, silver, and green dials. The 15202ST Jumbo in 39mm with ultra-thin Calibre 2121 runs alongside it as the heritage reference.

What is the Tapisserie dial?

The Grande Tapisserie is a guilloché pattern applied to Royal Oak dials — a raised checkerboard of small squares created by machine engraving under magnification. The pattern creates visual depth and catches light differently from every angle. Genta specified it for the original 5402 in 1972 as a counterpoint to the steel case. Every authentic Royal Oak dial must show this pattern precisely — incorrect Tapisserie scale or alignment is an immediate authentication flag.

What is the difference between the 15500ST and 15400ST?

The 15500ST replaced the 15400ST in 2019. Key differences: the 15500ST uses the new Calibre 4302 with 70-hour power reserve vs the 15400ST's Calibre 3120 with 60 hours. The 15500ST has a wider date aperture, shorter hour indices with no marker at 3 o'clock, and a slightly thicker case profile. Both are 41mm. The 15400ST remains highly collectible — particularly in blue dial — and can represent value on the secondary market relative to current 15500ST premiums.

Does the Royal Oak hold its value?

Steel Royal Oak references — particularly the 15500ST, 15202ST Jumbo, and chronograph — consistently sell at or above retail price on secondary markets. Demand structurally exceeds AP's deliberately constrained supply. Precious metal Royal Oaks in rose and white gold hold 80-90% of retail. Diamond-set factory references command premiums driven by both watch and gemstone value. The Royal Oak is among the five most investment-stable watch references available from any manufacturer.

How do I authenticate a Royal Oak?

Authentication requires verifying six elements: serial number against AP production records, Tapisserie pattern scale and alignment, case finishing quality on polished/brushed transitions, eight screw head finish and alignment, movement caliber against reference specifications, and bracelet hallmarks. Counterfeit Royal Oaks are common — particularly online. Our 30+ years authenticating AP watches means we have identified every counterfeit variant in circulation. Every Royal Oak we carry is verified across all six criteria before listing.

Can I sell my Royal Oak to Diamond Source NYC?

Yes. We purchase Royal Oak watches across all references, sizes, and metals at competitive current market rates with immediate payment.
