The Rolex Milgauss is a unique and distinctive model in the Rolex Professional Series, originally designed in the mid-1950s for the scientific community, specifically to address the problem of magnetism interfering with watch accuracy.
Its name is a portmanteau of mille (French for thousand) and gauss, the unit of magnetic flux density, highlighting its key feature: resistance to magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss. This capability is achieved by housing the self-winding Manufacture Rolex Calibre 3131 movement inside an internal magnetic shield made of ferromagnetic alloys—a classic Faraday cage design.
The Calibre 3131 is a COSC-certified Superlative Chronometer and also incorporates a Parachrom hairspring for additional anti-magnetic properties and enhanced shock resistance.
